英文勵志故事：寧靜的真諦
There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two be really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the bush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest----in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?
“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

One fine day, an old couple around the age of 70, walks into a lawyer's office. Apparently, they are there to file a porce. Lawyer was very puzzled, after having a chat with them, he got their story.
This couple had been quarreling all their 40 over years of marriage nothing ever seems to go right.
They hang on because of their children, afraid that it might affect their up-bringing. Now, all their children have already grown up, have their own family, there's nothing else the old couple have to worry about, all they wanted is to lead their own life free from all these years of unhappiness from their marriage, so both agree on a porce.
Lawyer was having a hard time trying to get the papers done, because he felt that after 40 years of marriage at the age of 70, he couldn't understand why the old couple would still wants a porce.
While they were signing the papers, the wife told the husband. “I really love you, but I really can't carry on anymore, I'm sorry.”
"It's OK, I understand." said the husband. Looking at this, the lawyer suggested a dinner together, just three of them, wife thought, why not, since they are still going be friends.
At the dining table, there was a silence of awkwardness.
The first dish was roasted chicken, immediately, the old man took the drumstick for the old lady. "Take this, it's your favorite."
Looking at this, the lawyer thought maybe there's still a chance, but the wife was frowning when she answer. "This is always the problem, you always think so highly of yourself, never thought about how I feel, don't you know that I hate drumsticks?”
Little did she know that, over the years, the husband have been trying all ways to please her, little did she know that drumsticks was the husband's favorite.
Little did he know that she never thought he understand her at all, little did he know that she hates drumsticks even though all he wants is the best for her.
That night, both of them couldn't sleep, toss and turn, toss and turn. After hours, the old man couldn't take it anymore, he knows that he still loves her, and he can't carry on life without her, he wants her
在一個晴朗的天氣里，有一對七十余歲的老夫婦走進了律師事物所里面。很顯然，他們到這里來是為了辦理離婚手續。在跟他們寒暄了幾句后，這兩位的‘戲劇性’經歷讓負責辦理事務的律師們很是茫然、舉手無措。
這兩位在婚后的四十年里面一直爭吵不停，兩人之間好象一切都是那么不和諧、不自然。
由于擔心離婚后也許會對孩子們有不利影響，兩個人就繼續呆在一起，繼續湊合著。事到如今，孩子們都已長大成年，與自己分家獨過，這樣對老兩口來說已沒有什么后顧之憂了。經歷了這么多年不快的婚姻生活，兩人現在都只是想要分手離開，尋找自己的生活。
一紙離書讓律師倒犯起難來。眼前兩個人都70歲上下有著40多年的婚姻史，自己弄不明白為什么這兩人還要爭著離婚呢?
當他們忙碌著簽定離婚書時，老太太告訴老頭子說：“我啊，心里還有著你，只是受不了跟你一起生活下去了，我也沒有招啊。”
老頭子接話說：“誒啊，沒啥，我也明白。”眼見著這老兩口說著話，律師提議仨人一起去吃頓便飯。老太太想了想，‘買賣不成仁義在’，自己干嗎不去呢?
大家圍坐一起吃的時候呢，桌面上到是多了那么點尷尬味道。
第一道菜是烤雞，菜剛上桌，馬上老頭一邊夾了個雞腿給老太太一邊嘴里說著“來，平常你最愛吃這個。”
律師眼看著老頭一舉一動，心想這老兩口可能還有復合的可能。哪知道一旁老太太不干了，眼眉挑了起來。
嘴里頭念叨“你看你，我最煩你這樣，你總是想干啥干啥，從來不問別人，你不知道我不愛吃這玩意么?”
老太太哪里知道，這么多年走過來，老頭一直花心思想讓老伴心里頭暖和，也不知道其實老頭嘴最喜歡的就是這雞腿。
老頭那里知道一直以來老太太看不上自己所做的事，也不知道自己最愛吃的東西夾給老伴后反倒會讓她不高興。
那天晚上這倆人都覺得心里不塌實，在床上翻來復去。許久過后，老頭心里癢癢，他明白自己心里還是惦記著老伴，自己這輩子沒她不行，他得跟老伴重歸于好，他得讓老太太知道自己‘老頭疼她’的想法。
老頭拿起了話筒，開始撥老伴的號碼，電話那邊一直在響，老頭也一直在撥號。
另一邊呢，老太太心里也不好受，她也想不明白這么多年過去了，老頭雜還不明白自己的心思呢。她心里也疼老伴，但是她就是跟老頭過不下去了。電話零聲響個不停，她知道是老頭打過來地，可是就沒去接聽，因為不知道拿起來時候跟老頭說些啥好呢。“都過去了，我本來就想這么辦的，現在我就該一直這么做下去，不然太丟老臉了。”
老太太這樣固執著卻忘了老頭心臟不太好。
第二天時候，老太太聽到信了，老頭昨天夜里過世了。她急沖沖趕了過去，看到老頭臨走時趟在沙發上，手里還握著電話。一定是在給她撥電話號碼的時候，老頭心臟病犯了。
老太太內心十分悲傷。她得為老頭收拾身后事。當她打開老頭的抽屜時，她看到了老頭留下的保險單，那是在他們結婚時簽的，受益人是她。而且在保險單中夾著一張便條。
“留給我最最親愛的老伴，當你讀到這張字條的時候，我相信我已不在人世了。我給你買了這份保險，雖然只有十萬元錢，我希望它能幫我完成當初我娶你的時候許下的承諾。我也許不在了，我希望能夠用這些錢照顧你，就如同我還活著那般照顧你。我想讓你知道我會一直在你身邊。我愛著你......”
當老太太讀到這的時候，忍不住，淚水絕堤不已。

A little boy asked his mother: “Why are you crying?”
“Because I am a woman.” She told him.
“I don’t understand” he said.
His mum just hugged him and said: “And you never will.”
Later the little boy asked his father: “ Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?”
“All woman cry for no reason.” Was all his dad could say.
The little boy grow up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to God, when God got on the phone, he asked, “God, why do women cry so easily?”
God said: “ When I made the women, she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave her inner strength to endure childbirth, and the rejections many times comes from her children.
I gave her hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complains.
“I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even her children has hurt her very badly.
“I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.”
“I gave her the wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strength and resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly.”
“And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. That is her exclusively to use whenever it is needed.”
“You see the beauty of a women is not the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair.”
